What Are Superior Courts

Superior Court Background

A High Court, more commonly known as a Superior Court, is a court that possesses unlimited jurisdiction, usually within a State. This means that Superior Courts are able to hear a range of different types of cases, as opposed to lesser courts which maintain limited jurisdiction and are only permitted to hear specific types of cases.

County Superior Court

A County Superior Court is a court that possesses unlimited jurisdiction within a specific county. A State can have a number of different County Superior Courts because a State is comprised of numerous counties. A County Superior Court will function independently of a State Superior Court, if one exists within the State. Canada has established the Superior Court of Justice, which operates much like County Superior Courts in the United States.
