The Contra Costa County Superior Court handles cases which fall under their jurisdiction. There are many types of cases heard at the courthouse, including family law cases, juvenile cases, civil cases, and criminal cases. Those that receive driving citations may also go to the Contra Costa County Superior Court.

Civil cases can include an individual seeking compensatory damages. For example, an individual that loaned a friend money and has not received payment on the loan may take the case to civil court.

There are also cases in which individuals are disputing property ownership rights and those cases could be heard at the Contra Costa County Superior Court. Property damage cases can also be heard at the courthouse and may be heard in civil court, depending on the legal facts of the case.

Criminal cases, including serious offense such as murder or attempted murder, can be heard at the Contra Costa County Superior Court. The Court will have a verdict in the case after all of the evidence and witness statements have been presented. However, in some cases the case ends in a mistrial when jurors cannot come to an agreement of guilt or innocence after a certain length of time.

Cases heard at the Contra Costa County Superior Court that involve accusations of the Court mishandling the case may be turned over to the Superior Court, which will then decide if the case was handled in an incorrect manner. They may in fact overturn the verdict.
